Final Journal Entry

7 May 2018   Play’s overall theme/message? I believe that the overall message that Variations on the Death of Trotsky is attempting to convey is that reality is not a set construct. It’s a mixture of sadness, joy, hilarity, and seriousness. It’s different for every person and constantly changing. There isn’t one way to define … [But wait, there’s more!]

Journal Entry #20

30 April 2018   We met as an official class one final time today to talk about our little plays. At this point we haven’t filmed yet so I’m not sure how that’s going to work out but I’m really excited to see everyone’s finished projects! I wish I could have taken more dramatic literature/theater-esque … [But wait, there’s more!]

Journal Entry #19

16 April 2018 I really do enjoy working on Variations. I like the version of the show that we have going – Kyle and Daylen are great partners and even though they aren’t theater nerds (who can blame them, those guys are weird) they’ve been giving it their all and I commend them for that! … [But wait, there’s more!]

9 April 2018 We set a record! Over 1,300 people in attendance and $6,000 in donations and ticket sales. The shows went remarkably well. I’m super proud of everyone in the cast, especially because for so many this was their first ever show. I didn’t think I’d ever sing the title song of Beauty and … [But wait, there’s more!]

2 April 2018 Ahhh show week! Usually at this point in a production I am convinced that nothing is going to come together. Every time with every show. I don’t know why I do it or what causes it, but I can rely on that feeling to alert me to an impending performance. I haven’t … [But wait, there’s more!]

26 March 2018 We’re coming down to the wire with our production of Beauty and the Beast! We’ve moved into the theater and we got to see City Theater’s production of Company which was very cool. I really enjoy Sondheim because he does an incredible job of writing roles regarding real humans on the stage. … [But wait, there’s more!]

Journal Entry #15

19 March 2018 In class we’ve been working on analyzing our show and identifying different elements such as beats and overall intentions which has been really interesting to me. For as long as I’ve done theater I don’t think I’ve taken much time to “sit down” with a show and look at my character beyond … [But wait, there’s more!]

Journal Entry #14

5 March 2018 For today’s class we had to decide whether we wanted to continue working on our plays, pick a new play, or write our own play for our final project. I really like Variations, and my group does too, so we’ve decided to stick with that one. I think the challenging part of … [But wait, there’s more!]

Journal Entry #13

26 February 2018 For our first look at absurdism we had to watch Waiting for Godot which two men are… waiting for a guy name Godot to show up. This is not my first introduction to absurdism (I had to read an absurdist play in AP Lit called The Sandbox or something) so I wasn’t … [But wait, there’s more!]

Journal Entry #12

21 February 2018 The play that I am working on in class is entitled Variations on the Death of Trotsky and I am playing Mrs. Trotsky, the wife of the political activist and writer Leon Trotsky. Basically what happens in the play is Mrs. Trotsky shows Trotsky an entry in an encyclopedia that talks about … [But wait, there’s more!]
