The Room: Part 1

Today was the first rehearsal of Nikolai’s original play The Room, which as we found out, is actually the title of another play but oh well it’s this play’s title now, too. Reading through this show without the help of a professional director has been interesting but I think we have a really good cast so far. Quick plot overview: these students wind up in a room with someone who has been trapped there for years. The students realize the room is where their teacher sent them in order to make the decision for them of when to attend college. The students meet Rebekah who has been sent to the room but hasn’t been chosen to leave, and they talk about their frustrations with the system that forces them to immediately go to college when they all have different life paths in mind. The show is definitely a little abstract, but has elements of realism and naturalism in it and I can’t decide which is more prominent. The play ends without a definite answer of what will happen next, yet the action that does occur is contained and represented nicely in the part of the situation that the audience does see. The dialogue is fairly naturalistic in the sense that the characters tend to say things that don’t exactly forward the plot but are representative of what someone might say if they were in the same predicament. We perform the show on Friday the 16th so I’m excited to see how it turns out!
