Performance 2: Peppermint

Tonight I went to go see Alliance’s annual drag show with this year’s featured performer, Peppermint. Peppermint was the runner up on a season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and recently spoke at the Grammy’s regarding Offset’s (a famous rapper) use of the word “queer” in one of his songs. Peppermint was amazing; everything from her extravagant outfits, original songs entitled “Shady Phone” and “Dollar In My Titties”, and her own personal speech on heros, I loved the way that Peppermint commanded the stage and engaged the audience. Even though our on campus “performance venues” are nowhere near good quality, Peppermint was still able to put on an awesome show and make our lack of tech support humorous and funny rather than letting it detract from her performance. While Peppermint was changing in between her acts, local drag queens including Famine and Big Mama Sativa gave great renditions of “California Girls” and “Cowboy Casanova.” The continuous cheering and encouragement from the crowd quickly turned into a standing ovation after Peppermint’s big finale finish which was a medley of songs. She then took a more serious tone as she talked about her experience as a trans woman of color and how drag has helped her find her voice. I am a huge fan of drag shows and Peppermint’s performance is definitely one that is now at the top of my list.
