The play that I am working on in class is entitled Variations on the Death of Trotsky and I am playing Mrs. Trotsky, the wife of the political activist and writer Leon Trotsky. Basically what happens in the play is Mrs. Trotsky shows Trotsky an entry in an encyclopedia that talks about his death and Trotsky is trying to make sense of the whole event… while he has a mountain climber’s axe stuck in his skull. There are several times where Trotsky dies on stage and a bell is rung in order to symbolize the end of that section of the play. I’m really excited to work on Variations because of the humorous elements within the show.
